2007 April to June Newsletters
Edition 2007-14

Good afternoon, and a glorious one it is!  That sun sure feels good .

The LL08 Society has endeavoured to plan events throughout 2008 that will appeal to every member of the family and will encompass every demographic, and so we're very pleased to report that, in the first of many activities that will include the children and youth of our county, Shelburne Regional High School and Hillcrest Academy will take the lead in a very special event in 2008 that will challenge the creative minds and talents of Shelburne students.  At the start of the new school year in 2007, students at both schools will be offered the opportunity to write an essay and/or create a drawing related to Shelburne's Loyalist history, be it in 1783, 2008 or anywhere in between.  Early in January 2008, the best essay and drawing will be selected from each school and the winning students will be awarded a prize.  And as a bonus, the winning essays and drawings will be published in The Coast Guard - something for Mom's or Gram's scrapbook!   As an added bonus, Lewis Jackson, noted local historian and author, has kindly offered to help judge the entries.  As well, a selection of the other essays and drawings that do not win will also be featured on a random basis in The Coast Guard throughout 2008 in honour of the Loyalist Landing celebrations.

Of course, this won't be the only 2008 activity involving children and youth.  In the works are a basketball tournament between high schools, family studies featuring 18th century cooking and sewing, and hopefully even some 18th century dancing lessons!  Although some leads have already stepped forward (or been drafted) for some of these activities, we'll still be looking for volunteers!  Think about it - going to school will actually be fun!  How wicked, how naughty -and no detention or homework either!

For your calendar -

Don't forget to celebrate Shelburne's 100th birthday this Wednesday, 4 Apr!  Although the town was originally founded in 1783, it was actually incorporated only 100 years ago, so the town is throwing itself a birthday party.  The fun starts at 6:30 pm at the Community Centre on King Street.  There will be very special guests, presentations and birthday cake!

Kim Walker advises that the next Costume Ctee meeting will be held on Thursday, 19 Apr 2007 at 2:30 pm at the Genealogical Society.

And finally, there won't be any newsletter next week as I will be in Ottawa celebrating Easter with my family, getting a much needed break from LL08 and delivering Christmas gifts - don't ask about that last one.  Send me your e-mails as usual - I'll see them when I get back in a week!  Jim actually offered to forward them to Ottawa - yeah, right...

Good evening everyone!

I'd like to start things off with a great big thank you to Shelburne Town Council!  It has granted a blanket approval for all businesses and restaurants in the Town of Shelburne to set up a sidewalk sale or sidewalk caf=E9 for the town-wide yard & sidewalk sale on Saturday, 2 Jun 07, with a rain date of Saturday, 9 Jun 07.  So, start planning!  There's nothing to stop us now - we have our blanket approval, we know the weather's going to be great, and we have a few thousand people on the South Shore who love to go bargain-hunting on a Saturday morning.  Can it get any better?  Let's make it happen!

The Costume Ctee wants to get its hands on a bunch of dummies!  The Ctee has obtained permission to have a display of period attire in the windows of the Cox Warehouse and it is looking for dress mannequins to use in their window displays.  If you've got any you'd like to part with or loan, please call Kim Walker at 875-4299 or drop them off at the Genealogical Society during office hours.

Word is there's a new dance craze in town . it's called The Loyalist Landing and it's based on 18th century themes.  Created for the Prince of Wales Historic Dancers by John Wood, founder of the Playford Dancers in Halifax, the dance is set to the music of "Albany Landing" and relates several facets of the Loyalist landing.  The Historic Dancers have been diligently learning the steps as they hope to show off their new moves by Founders' Days this summer ...

Coming Up This Week:

-         Fundraising Ctee meeting on Monday, 16 Apr at 10:30 am at the Genealogical Society office.

-         Costume Ctee meeting on Thursday, 19 Apr at 2:30 pm at the Genealogical Society office.

-         "Our Community - Something for Everyone" on Saturday, 21 Apr at 11 am at the Barrington High School.

I'd like to leave you with this delightful note that I received from Yola and Forbes Christie of Windward Flutes in Shelburne:

"Dear Loyalists of 2008,

We have been working on the "Shelburne Fyfe" and would like to speak with anyone who may know about the fifes that were being played here by the Loyalist regiments around the time of their landing and settling in Shelburne.  If you have an old fife, know something of the history of British or Colonial American fifes used here in Nova Scotia, or in any other way might provide information about the fife in use at the end of the 18th century, we would be delighted to talk with you.  Our "Shelburne Fyfe" prototype will be ready to go into production by November of 2007, at which point we will take orders, so that those who want them before the launch of festivities in 2008 will be able to give them a whirl. Fife players may have special requirements, which can be specified in their order. We know that the 18th and 19th century makers were always prepared to tart up the regular model for the well-healed or upper class customer!  In what way would you like the launching of this fife to fit in with the Loyalist Landing anniversary celebrations?

Good evening!  Wasn't that just the most glorious day?  Welcome back sunshine and warmth - we've missed you .

The LL08 Society is very pleased to announce that Transcontinental Media Group will be the Official Media Sponsor for LL08!  Back in early March, Transcontinental Media Group (the group that brings you The Coast Guard, among many others) confirmed that they would be interested in partnering with the LL08 Society to provide a significant part of our 2008 advertising and promotional needs.  We recently received a written proposal from them outlining a very generous marketing package that will cover all of our print media requirements for LL08.

And still more good news!  We received written confirmation this past week from the Minister of Nova Scotia Tourism, Culture & Heritage that our year-long celebration has been designated a "Signature Event" for 2008!  That means LL08 will be featured in a number of their marketing activities such as the Doers' & Dreamers' Guide, the Festivals & Events guide, newspaper inserts and the www.novascotia.com tourism website.

We're getting there!  But we would never have gotten this far without our business plan, so we'd like to send a very big thank you to Dave Laycock, our business planner extraordinaire - his business plan gave life and credibility to the vision.  So, next time you run into Dave (figuratively, not literally .), please shake his hand and thank him.  Heck, give him a hug too - tell him Suzie said to!

The Shelburne County Archives & Genealogical Society is hosting an interesting lecture that ties in very nicely with next year's celebrations.  Professor H. Amani Whitfield from the University of Vermont will give a talk on slavery & the Loyalists in the Canadian Maritimes.  Professor Whitfield is currently researching a book that will likely be published next year.  The lecture will be held on Tuesday, 8 May 2007, at 7:30 pm at the Osprey Arts Centre.  Admission is a donation at the door.=20

And for all you members of the Linda & Andrea Jeffrey Fan Club, you're in for a wonderful treat!  As part of the LL08 celebrations, the Jeffrey duo has graciously consented to give an 18th century-themed concert, complete in period dress!  The event will be held on Sunday, 17 Aug 08 at the Osprey Arts Centre.  Stay tuned for more details!

Good morning!  Gotcha, this early in the morning, didn't I?  Go ahead, grab a coffee - I'll wait ...

Treasurer Jim & I took a road trip this week to Annapolis Royal to meet with the Annapolis Heritage Society on LL08.  Talk about an energetic, enthusiastic and dedicated bunch of people!  And what's really great - they want to be part of our 2008 celebrations!  The exchange of ideas and possibilities has already begun - we're looking forward to a productive and mutually beneficial partnership, for 2008 for sure, but hopefully beyond!

Have we got a treat for you in 2008!  Neville MacKay, Ohio's famous son and floral designer extraordinaire, has very kindly agreed to give one of his famous floral demonstrations at Founders' Days Weekend in July 08!  Neville's appearance will be the grand finale to the three July 08 showcase weekends - very appropriate that homegrown talent should close off the July festivities!

Some details on another event I've mentioned before - in February 08, the Black Loyalist Heritage Society will hold the premiere of the docu-drama Rough Crossings.  The film, based on a book by Simon Schama, intertwines American, British, Canadian and African history and chronicles the exodus of Black Loyalists to Nova Scotia after the US gained its independence, and how the life they came to was in many cases no better than the life they left.  In 1792, almost 1,200 former slaves boarded ships in Halifax harbour to make the last of the "rough crossings" to Sierra Leone, Africa, where they would form a new society of equals.  Interspersed with the story of the British abolitionists, Rough Crossings tracks the hard path of the former slaves who kept faith with the Crown.  It follows them, and their stalwart British backers, through the hopes, hardships and betrayals of an epic journey out of the new slave owners' Republic, into a harsh Nova Scotian wilderness settlement, and then, astonishingly, back over the Atlantic to the "free and virtuous black society" built in Sierra Leone under the heroic, if not neurotic, eyes of the visionary first Governor, John Clarkson, the younger brother of Thomas Clarkson, leader of the anti-slavery campaign.

If you're one of those people who like to read the book before you see the movie, the book is called Rough Crossings:  Britain, the Slaves and the American Revolution by Simon Schama.

And still with the Black Loyalist Heritage Society - the Society and Christ Church Shelburne would like to offer you a bit of light and sunshine in an otherwise dark and soggy weekend.  The Lunenburg County Fiddlers will be playing at the Anglican church on Sunday, 29 April (TOMORROW!) from 2 - 3:30 pm.  Admission is a free will offering and there will be refreshments and a social in the church hall after the performance.  Proceeds will be shared by the Society and the church.  A little toe-tapping will be just the ticket to chase away those wet weekend blues!

COMING UP THIS WEEK:
1)  The LL08 Society will be updating Shelburne Town Council on the 2008 celebrations.  It will be this Wednesday, 2 May, starting at 7 pm, in the Town Council Chambers on Water Street.  Hope to see you there!
2)  There will be a Costume Ctee meeting on Thursday, 3 May at 2:30 pm in the Genealogical Society office on Water Street.  The meeting is open to everyone, regardless of sewing abilities!

Edition 2007-18
Date: Sun, 6 May 2007 13:20:47

Good afternoon!  Lots of thank yous and tidbits today -

1)  The LL08 Society presented an update on the preparations for 2008 to Shelburne Town Council last Wednesday, 2 May.  We were very well received with the Mayor and Councillors expressing their full support for the celebrations, and they have readily agreed to provide the Society with a letter of endorsement for some provincial funding.  In particular, we'd like to commend Mayor Comeau for all the behind-the-scenes work he's doing on our behalf to bring some major attractions to the Waterfront Weekend in July 08!  At the same meeting, Council also approved seeding of the grounds at the old Shelburne Regional High School - that's where the re-enactors will set up camp in July 08.  Jim Spencer has very kindly agreed to provide the seed at cost.

2)  Under the initiative of LL08 Society director Doug Langley, the Carpentry Class at the NS Community College in Yarmouth has been busy for the last few months building us a portable booth.  It is to be painted in the Loyalist red, white & blue, and will be used at various promotional events throughout 2007, 2008 and beyond.  I haven't seen it yet, but Doug tells me it's a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.  Big thank you to the Carpentry Class and Kent Store in Yarmouth, Ven-Rez and Tim-BR Mart in Shelburne for their respective donations of time, skill and materiels!

3)  Update on the 2 Jun Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale.  This event is growing and growing!
- Posters are up all over Shelburne, Sable River (thank you Cindy & Sherm) and Barrington (thank you Steve).  I'll also be leaving a pile of posters at the Tim Hortons in Shelburne, but word of mouth is still the most effective way.  Help me spread the word!
- Bob Sinden, Manager of the new Tim-BR Mart on King Street, has confirmed that the store will be holding its grand opening on 2 Jun to coincide with the yard & sidewalk sale.  The fun starts at 8 am and will feature a band, free hot dogs and lots of in-store promotional specials.
- I've even received inquiries from folks out Barrington way asking if they could set up yard sale tables in town.  Of course you can!!  Since the town has granted a blanket approval to set up on the town's sidewalks for the day of the sale, space is not a problem.  And don't forget, there will also be lots of activity on the waterfront as the Yacht Club, the Osprey, the Beandock and the Museum all plan to hold their own yard sales, so that's another great spot to set up your tables.
- I've also started a list for "yardless yard salers" (coined by Jerry Locke ...) for anyone without a yard but who would like to set up a table.  If there's enough of you, we'll even set you up in the parking lot of the Community Centre on King Street in a flea market-type setting.
- Wherever you do set up, just remember not to impede pedestrian or motor traffic and to clean up after yourself!

4)  Also a heads up for your summer 2007 calendar.  Harmony Bazaar will be holding its 2nd annual Festival of Women & Song in Lockeport from 27-29 Jul.  This year, organizers will be expanding the marketplace where groups and businesses sell their crafts or products to festival goers.  If you're interested in renting a booth at the marketplace, contact Deena at 656-2688 or Errin at 875-5410.  Deadline for applications is 18 May.

COMING UP THIS WEEK -
- Don't forget that the Shelburne County Genealogical Society is hosting a lecture entitled "Slavery & the Loyalists in Maritime Canada".  The lecture will be presented by Dr. H. Amani Whitfield, Asst Professor of History at the University of Vermont, and will be held at the Osprey on Tuesday, 8 May at 7:30 pm.  Admission is a donation at the door.
- There will be a regular meeting of the LL08 Society next Saturday, 12 May at 10 am in the Town Council Chambers, Shelburne.  Look for the agenda later this week.

Edition 2007-19
Date: Sat, 12 May 2007 21:08:32

Good evening again!  Got the keyboard all warmed up from the minutes, so may as well keep going ...  More bits on the town-wide yard & sidewalk sale on Sat, 2 Jun 07:

1)  Greg Bennett, the editor of the Coast Guard, has very kindly (and probably just to get me out of his office) agreed to publish a list of the businesses/organizations/clubs that will be participating in the yard sale.  He doesn't know how much space he'll have for the list, but he promised to do his best.  So, I'm compiling a list.  If you haven't done so already, contact me ASAP if you are a business/organization/club =
in order to confirm your participation in the yard sale on 2 Jun.  I'll add your name to the list!

2)  As word spreads, I've been getting lots of inquiries from people/organizations in the suburbs and in neighbouring towns who want to sell at the yard sale.  Since Town Council has given us a blanket approval to use the town's sidewalks for the day of the yard sale, you can pretty well set up anywhere as long as you're not taking up some homeowner's or business' sidewalk space.  And wherever you set up, just make sure you're not impeding motor or foot traffic.  And please clean up after yourself!

3)  One of the organizations that will be participating in the yard sale is the Beulah Berman Animal Shelter.  They will be holding their yard sale out at the shelter in Sandy Point, at 528 Sandy Point Road.  So don't forget to add them to your itinerary.  Bonus - you might get to snuggle with some fuzzy hearts!

4)  As part of the promotion for Woodworkers' annual yard sale, CKBW traditionally puts together a "treasure chest" containing prizes donated by Shelburne County businesses.  These prizes have a combined value of up to $2,000 - nice little treasure chest!  Ballots are free and no purchases are necessary.  If you'd like to enter your name, ballots are available right now at the following businesses that have donated a prize for the treasure chest:

Clark's Harbour Red & White, Clark's Harbour
Old School Restaurant, Barrington
Causeway Interiors, Barrington
Sea Dog Saloon, Shelburne
Spencer's Garden Centre, Shelburne
TLC Pharmasave, Shelburne
Shelburne Furniture, Shelburne
Irving Mainway, Shelburne
Maria's Happy Face Place, Shelburne
Huskilson Chrysler, Shelburne
Butler's Small Engines & Repairs, Shelburne
Lyles Grocery, Shelburne
Shelburne Diesel, Shelburne
And of course, Woodworkers!

Ballots will also be available at Woodworkers' on the morning of the town-wide yard & sidewalk sale, and the winner will be drawn at 12:30 pm.

5)  Helen at Sophia's Cafe informs me that, although the restaurant won't be putting on a yard sale, they will have lunch specials that day for all those hungry bargain hunters.  And as a special treat, there will be free slushies for the kids!

COMING UP THIS WEEK:

Tomorrow is Mother's Day!!  Don't forget to thank or remember the woman who gave you life ...

Edition 2007-20
Date: Sun, 20 May 2007 17:56:29

Good afternoon - barely.  Just a bit of regular business to start off, then it's the latest on the town-wide yard & sidewalk sale!

The Costume Ctee is looking for a donation of "mylar" or some other type of polyester film that can be used to cover the windows at the Cox Warehouse to cut down on the sun's UV rays.  Ctee Chair Kim Walker is worried that the sun may fade or harm the LL08 display, so she wondered if anyone out there might have some lying around that they're not using.  If you can help, please contact her at 875-4299 weekdays or e-mail me.

Forty-eight businesses/organizations/clubs have now confirmed that they will be participating one way or another in the town-wide yard & sidewalk sale on 2 Jun.  And from the feedback I've been getting, many households in and around town will also be holding their own yard sales.  I've even received inquiries about the event from Yarmouth and Halifax!

Attention all you yardless yard salers out there - another spot to set up will be the Community Centre parking lot on King Street, alongside the park area.  It's a great location - lots of room, lots of parking and washroom facilities nearby (very important!!).  Plus you'll be in good company as the Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department will be holding a BBQ and car wash at the firehall.  And if you'd rather have grass under your feet instead of pavement, you can also set up in the park area itself.  Remember not to block the parking lot entrances and to keep the area clean.

The Port Roseway Chapter IODE will be yard saling in the old Motormart parking lot, while the Busy Fingers Club will be at the Legion Hall on Water Street.  The Lions Club will be holding its yard sale at the club house on Elliott Street and offers free tables to any yard salers who want to set up inside.  Our House on King Street will also be fundraising - they'll be selling all those bikes they've been fixing for the last few months!

I'm very pleased to report that we have a definite "in" when it comes to praying for good weather - many of the Town's churches are participating in the yard sale!  St. Thomas Catholic Church on Buckley Street, Christ Church and Trinity United Church on Hammond Street, Grace Baptist Church on John Street, and St. Peter's Community Church will be in the Community Centre parking lot on King Street.   Are we covered or what?=20

The Cape Cod Motel is offering a yard sale special - $50 + tax for a room on Friday and/or Saturday night which includes a 20% off coupon for breakfast at Scotia Lunch.  Owner Raymond has also offered the front lawn of the Cape Cod for anyone who wants to set up tables.  Mr. Fish, Scotia Lunch and Luong's Restaurant advise they will all have lunch specials on the day of the yard sale, and if you're in the mood for something grilled while scouring the downtown for bargains, the Girl Guides will be BBQing on the waterfront.   The Shelburne Youth Bowling Council will also have a hot dog stand by the VIC.  We don't want anyone to go home hungry!

I need a few good men, women or young people to scout around on the morning of 2 Jun and put up signs at streets where there are yard sales.  I'll also need those same volunteers to help take down all the yard sale signs when it's over.  Contact me if you're interested in helping out and we can discuss logistics.  As well, if you and your neighbours are holding yard sales, it would be a big help if you could put up a sign yourself at the end of your street directing bargain hunters your way.  If you put up signs, please don't forget to take them down too.

One last thing - the LL08 Society will be setting itself up at the Community Centre parking lot.  I'm looking for volunteers to help us set up and sell - we'll have a truckload of stuff!  I'm also hoping some kind-hearted souls out there will take pity on us and give us goodies for our bake table - hint, hint.  Nancy Thomas has already offered to make some of her famous potato fudge .

Less than two weeks to go - it's shaping up to be an incredible day!

Edition 2007-21
Date: Sun, 27 May 2007 17:26:07

Good afternoon.  The sun is shining, a warm breeze is blowing, the spring flowers are blooming, and the hummingbirds are humming.  Can it get any better than this?  Yes, it can, if the weather is just like this next Saturday ...!

Well, less than a week to go for the town-wide yard & sidewalk sale and the enthusiasm is still building!  From the e-mails, calls and reports I've been getting all week, it seems that just about everyone on the South Shore is planning to be in Shelburne on 2 Jun!

The Museum Complex wants me to let everyone know that they will be holding their yard sale and BBQ in the Coyle House yard down in the historic district - I'm told it's the patch of green with the flag pole.  The folks from Camp Jordan will be selling hot dogs and t-shirts at Atlantic House Park on Water Street, and I got a call from the Masons - Albert Lodge will be selling raffle tickets on a generator at their lodge just across the street.

It now seems that the Beulah Burman Animal Shelter won't be the only yard sale in Sandy Point - I've been informed that a whole bunch of homeowners in Sandy Point AND Jordan Bay are also holding yard sales!  That'll make a great little bargain-hunting loop - Shelburne, Sandy Point, Jordan Bay and back to Shelburne.  And Jeff & Dianne Strang, the owners of The Ideal Discount Store (aka the dollar bin) at the Shelburne Mall decided they wanted in on the fun too, so the store will be holding a yard sale in the mall parking lot next Saturday.  Check out their ad in this week's Coast Guard!

All in all, 49 Shelburne businesses, organizations and clubs have confirmed that they will be participating in the town-wide yard & sidewalk sale, and the latest tally indicates that about 50 households will be having yard sales - incredible!  So, one final run through all the details:

- The show starts at 8 am next Saturday, 2 Jun, weather permitting.
- If you want to stop selling at 2 pm, you can.  If there is still lots of traffic and you want to keep going until suppertime, fill your boots!
- If you and your neighbours are holding yard sales, please put up a sign at the end of your street.  And don't forget to take the sign down at the end of the day!
- If you're a yardless yard saler, you can set yourself up on the town's sidewalks, on the green space along the waterfront, or up at the Community Centre parking lot.   Please don't set up in front of someone's home or business without their consent, don't block access to any home or business, and make sure that the sidewalks are not blocked to pedestrian traffic.
- Clean up after yourself - please don't leave behind any garbage, unsold items or mess of any kind.
- Don't forget that the LL08 Society will be holding its own yard sale to fundraise for 2008, and you can help out by donating some baked goods for our bake table.
- Please come visit us (we'll be the ones in 18th century costumes ...!) at the Community Centre parking lot.  We'll have a yard sale table, a bake table, and we'll be selling raffle tickets on that cute little rocking dory.  We'll even have a couch - for sale, not to sit on!
- And the most important detail of all - let's have some fun and just enjoy the day!

Edition 2007-22
Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2007 21:22:04

Good evening!  What a difference a day makes!  Thank goodness we didn't have this weather yesterday ...

Wasn't that one heck of a party?  Thank you for making Shelburne's First Annual Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale such an outstanding success!  We held it and they came - in droves!  It was shoulder-to-shoulder and bumper-to-bumper in many areas of town - what an incredible sight and what a wonderful dry-run for 2008!  Mind you, all the planning and all the publicity in the world would have meant nothing if it hadn't been for this community coming together and making it happen.  Ya done good, ya done real good!!

On behalf of the Loyalist Landing 2008 Society, I'd like to send out lots of thank yous.  First, to Woodworkers' for allowing us to share the spotlight during their big annual event and then to Tim-BR Mart for scheduling their grand opening as part of the town-wide sale.  Those two events really got things rolling!  Next, to all the merchants, service organizations and clubs - I can't thank you enough for being part of this.  Your participation was so important and made all the difference - it put out the welcome mat!  And last but certainly not least, a really big thank you to all the many householders (in Shelburne, Sandy Point and Jordan Bay!) who held their own yard sales - you were definitely the creamy, extra rich icing on the cake!   And as the LL08 Society was also fundraising with its own yard sale, we'd like to thank the very kind people who generously donated yard sale items and goodies for our bake table -  and, of course, all the people who bought them!  Couldn't have done it without you!

Many of you have already e-mailed or called me to say that you had a "blast" and that you can't wait to do it all again next year!  Since this year's event was meant as a dry-run, I'd like to get some feedback from the "person on the street" as it were.  I've already received a couple of suggestions that we may look to implement next year, so if you have any ideas to make the 2008 town-wide yard & sidewalk sale even bigger and better, send them to me!

One last note on Saturday's town-wide yard & sidewalk sale from a lady who visited our yard sale table.  Talking about all the activity in town, she said it wasn't about the yard sales or the bargains - it was about being part of something fun.  So there you have it!

And getting back to 2008, I've attached an electronic copy of a catalogue that Jeff & Dianne Strang at the Ideal Discount Store forwarded to me recently.  The catalogue features ready-made, reasonably-priced period costumes - perfect for people who aren't interested in sewing up a costume or for any business looking to outfit its employees en masse for 2008!  The costumes are available through one of the store's suppliers and the prices have been discounted by 25% off the suggested retail price.  For more details, please contact Jeff.

COMING UP THIS WEEK:

Regular meeting of the LL08 Society, Saturday, 9 Jun 07, 10 am, Town Council Chambers on Water Street.  Stay tuned for the agenda.

Edition 2007-23
Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2007 19:43:03

Good evening!  Not much to report on tonight - it's been a quiet week on the LL08 front, giving us a chance to catch up on the paperwork, e-mails and phone calls!

1)  Still getting feedback from last weekend's town-wide yard & sidewalk sale - it seems that everyone made money last weekend, and yet, are you sitting down?  It didn't cost a cent to put it together - not even any publicity costs!  Goes to show you what a community can do when it comes together, and you don't have to break the bank to do it!  Well, keep that thought in mind as you start making plans for next year's event which will see the whole town decorated in Loyalist red, white & blue, with the Loyalist flag flying everywhere, and hopefully many of the townspeople in costume.  Should be quite the sight!   Spring Into Shelburne will be held on Sat 7 Jun 08 and will feature a town-wide yard & sidewalk sale in the morning (again in conjunction with Woodworkers' annual event), an auction at the Cox Warehouse on the waterfront in the afternoon, and musical entertainment in the evening.  It'll be a full day of spring revelry!  Mark your calendar!

2)  Just a reminder that the LL08 Society is in fundraising mode.  We will need some money for the 2008 events!  Currently, we are selling raffle tickets on a rocking dory built and generously donated by Curtis Mahaney.   If you haven't bought your tickets yet, come see me!  And if you'd like to help us out, I'm looking for volunteers to take the rocking dory on the road to sell tickets across the county.  I've already got a couple of spots booked, but in this case, more is better.  Tell me where you want to sell and when, and I'll set it up for you.   We need some help with this fundraiser ... and I promise to make it as painless as possible!=20

3)  The LL08 Society will be participating in the Clark's Harbour Canada Day Parade on Sat, 30 Jun.  Here's a perfect opportunity for you to wear your costume, practice your royal wave, and have lots of fun to boot.  We'll also be setting up a booth to sell raffle tickets and LL08 t-shirts.  If you're interested in helping out or joining us, get in touch with me.  The more the merrier!

4)  We 'll be doing the same thing in the Liverpool Privateer Days Parade on Sat, 7 Jul - this time, with a float!  We're looking for volunteers to help build and decorate the float - you don't have to be particularly artistic, just enthusiastic.  If you're interested in helping out with the float and/or being part of the parade, contact me.

Good evening!   This will be a short one as there's not much to report this week.

First off, some administrative news regarding the LL08 Society.   Due to health and personal reasons, Kim Walker, pint-sized dynamo, resigned recently as Co-Chair and a director of the Society.   As a Co-Chair is not expressly required under the Society's by-laws, a replacement will not be actively sought at this time and Al Delaney will therefore carry on as sole Chair of the Society.  Kim has also handed the reins of the Costume Committee to Marion Flemming, although she will remain an active member of both the Costume Committee and the Society.=20

Which reminds me - check out the window at the Cox Warehouse next time you're on the waterfront.  The Costume Committee's LL08 Society display is now in place!

I know that some of you have expressed an interest in joining the LL08 Society at the Privateer Days parade in Liverpool on Sat, 7 Jul, so don't be shy.  You know, deep down inside, the kid in you has always wanted to be in a parade - admit it!  Well, here's your big chance.  We're looking for volunteers to help with the design of the float, help put it all together and then, the best part, ride on it at the parade.  And did I mention the fame and glory?  If our float happens to win in one of the categories, there will be the endless adulation of the crowds and years of bragging rights .   Up to the challenge?  If so, contact Doug Langley at 875-1258 or doug.l@ns.sympatico.ca.  Doug is the man in charge and he's looking for volunteers, ideas and numbers so he can get us on the way to a prize-winning float!

I've also received inquiries about Loyalist flags.  As you'll recall, the vision for 2008 is that the whole town of Shelburne (and maybe the County too?) be decked out in Loyalist flags and Loyalist red/white/blue bunting.   It seems that we may have found a source for the Loyalist flags, but we still want to do a little more comparison shopping.  So, stay tuned - hopefully in the next week or two, we should have a reliable and very reasonably-priced source lined up for a bulk order of flags of every size.  In the meantime, start thinking about your flag wish list!

Hope all you dads out there had a grand day - the weather sure cooperated!
