2007 July to September Newsletters

Good afternoon!

First and foremost, I'd like to send a big thank you to Jeff & Dianne Strang of Ideal Discount Store.  Not only have they very kindly donated a large red vinyl banner to the Society, they've even made arrangements to have our name and logo printed on it!  This banner will be perfect for use at parades and various promotional events for and throughout 2008.  Thank you so much, J&D!

The LL08 Society will be very busy over the next couple of months and we're putting the call out for volunteers:

- On Sat 30 Jun, we'll be participating in the Clark's Harbour Canada Day parade.  We'll be dressed in Loyalist costume and walking along the parade route, waving the Loyalist flag and carrying our new banner, of course!  Anyone who would like to walk along with us is more than welcome - guaranteed to be lots of fun because parades are always lots of fun!  After the parade, look for us at the Town Hall area - we'll be selling t-shirts and rocking dory raffle tickets.

- On Sat 7 Jul, we'll be at Privateer Days in Liverpool.  We'll have a float in the parade and a booth to sell LL08 t-shirts and more raffle tickets on the rocking dory.   A few people have already stepped forward to volunteer (or been drafted!) to help with the float and participate in the parade - wonderful!  Doug Langley has organized a meeting this week to agree on a design for the float and line up any supplies we'll need.  In order to accommodate as many of the volunteers as possible, you have a choice of two timings for the meeting - 3 pm and 6:30 pm.   Please advise Doug at 875-1258 or me as to which one you plan to attend!  The meetings will be held at the Shelburne Community Centre on King Street.  And even if you can't make either of the meetings, if you have any ideas or think you may have something that we could use to decorate the float, please let us know!

- On Sat 28 Jul, the LL08 Society will be at Harmony Bazaar in Lockeport.  No parade this time - we'll be participating in the marketplace at the Sea Caps Memorial Park, selling t-shirts, raffle tickets and just generally promoting the 2008 celebrations.  If you'd like to join us, please contact me.  You'll have a great time meeting a whole lot of people and you'll hear some very talented female artists!   I should also mention that Harmony Bazaar's website is up and running - check them out at www.harmonybazaar.com for all the details on this year's festival.

- On Tue 7 Aug, the Society will, once again, participate in the Shelburne Ex parade.  As you may recall, our float placed third last year in the "organization" category, so the pressure's really on this year .!  And not to mention that we just had so much fun waving and talking to everyone on the parade route!  I'll have more details as we get closer to August.

And something for your calendar!  The Black Loyalist Heritage Society will be hosting The Quilters of Gees' Bend at an interactive quilting workshop to be held on Thu, 12 Jul from 10 am - 3 pm, at the Birchtown Community Centre.  The workshop will feature quilting techniques with the ladies of Gee's Bend, Alabama, as well as a sit-down lunch, historical re-enactment and the launch of an exhibit of quilts from the Black community.  Registration fee for the day, which includes lunch, is $25/person.  For more info, see the attached document and contact Shari at 875-1310 or Jackie at 875-1606.

Edition 2007-26

Happy Canada Day everyone!  Tonight, we have a double A newsletter - Accolades and Announcements!

First, the accolades.  A bunch of us met last week to discuss a design for the LL08 Society float for upcoming parades and we came up with a terrific design - a monochromatic painting of Shelburne Harbour as it would have looked back in the 18th century.  The painting would not only serve as a backdrop on the float, but could also be used as a backdrop at other events.  So here's where the accolades come in:

A huge thank you to artist/muralist Judy Matthews, a new future resident of Shelburne and a member of the LL08 Society.  She's the one who actually came up with the mural concept.  Even as she was planning her visit to Shelburne back in the early spring, she had called me to say she wanted to help us out while she was here, so when the subject of a float design came up, she eagerly stepped forward.  And although she's only here for a few short (dare I say frantic?) weeks fixing up her new future home, she very kindly volunteered to design and paint the mural for the float, free of charge!   So thank you, Judy - welcome to Shelburne and aren't we lucky that you've chosen to make a new home in our community!  You can see Judy's work at www.judymatthewsartist.ca.  You'll also be able to meet the artist and purchase some of her paintings/prints when the Tall Ships visit Shelburne in July.=20

The second accolade goes to Tim-BR Mart on King Street.  Manager Bob Sinden and his staff have all been extremely supportive of the Society's endeavours from day one.  And they came through for us yet again - they donated the sheet of plywood for the backdrop, a gallon of primer and two gallons of paint!  With community support like this, how can 2008 not be a success?  Thank you, Tim-BR Mart!

The third accolade goes to the Town of Shelburne.  They have very kindly let us borrow some wooden monochromatic silhouettes of some of Shelburne's historic homes to use on the float.  It just so happens that they will fit in perfectly with Judy's design - don't you love it when a plan comes together?  Thank you, Wilmont and Town staff!

And now for the announcements:

In our search for a Loyalist flag supplier, the Society quickly came to the realization that there's a whole lot more to selling flags than just selling flags.  As we'd rather spend our time and energies on planning the 2008 events, we have therefore decided to hand the flagpole - as it were - to Jeff Strang of Ideal Discount Store.  As a retailer, Jeff is eminently qualified to sort through the maze of quotes, quantities and quality.  To wit, he has already found at least one supplier who has quoted a cost much less than anything the Society has found to date.  As a strong supporter of the 2008 celebrations, he is very eager to see the Town and the County decked out in Loyalist red, white & blue in 2008.  It will be a few more weeks still before Jeff has all his flags lined up - when he does, I'll let you know!  Start thinking about where you are going to hang yours!!

And the final announcement (drum roll, please) - the LL08 Society website is up and running!  A very big thank you to Jamie and web maestro Louis at Transcontinental Media for all their hard work in making the website a reality.  Interesting trivia, by the way - our website is a first for Transcontinental - we're the guinea pigs!  Check us out at www.loyalistsatshelburne.ca  - see what a great job they did and what a great year it's going to be!

Edition 2007-27
Date: Sun, 8 Jul 2007 22:31:00

Good evening!  Sorry to be so late - decided to veg in front of a movie.  A real Academy Award contender - NOT!  Kevin Sorbo was the only reason I kept watching it .!

We'll start with an update on Loyalist flags.  Jeff Strang of Ideal Discount Store informs me that he has found a supplier for 36" x 60" Loyalist flags and that he has already placed an order for 100!  Jeff plans to sell the flags for a very reasonable price, one that will likely be less than the wholesale price of many suppliers.  That's great news for all you "Loyalists" out there who want to decorate for the 225th anniversary celebrations. Jeff is also looking into getting flagpoles for around the same price as the flags.  He's still chasing a supplier for small hand-held "stick" flags, perfect to wave at parades or to jazz up window boxes!  Stay tuned.

And Jeff has also asked me to spread the news that he has been successful in having four new exclusive "Shelburne" postcards created from prints by Shelburne photographer Al Delaney.  The four postcards will be of the Cape Roseway Light, the Sandy Point Light with a tall ship in the background, a shot looking down Dock Street, and a shot from Dock Street looking out on the harbour.  The postcards, which are expected to retail for less than $1 each, should arrive shortly and Jeff advises that if any local businesses or organizations want to order some wholesale (minimum order 100), they should get in touch with him!

Next, we move on to costumes!  Marion Flemming has resigned as Chair of the LL08 Costume Committee to concentrate her energies on her period dress business.  The other members of the committee have also resigned for a variety of personal and work-related reasons.  This all means that we are looking to create a new Costume Committee - Chair and members as well.  It will involve a certain amount of time, a certain amount of planning, a certain amount of initiative and absolutely no pay!   However, it will involve a lot of fun as we attempt to get everyone in period costumes for the celebrations next year.  If you're interested in heading or being part of the Costume Committee, let me know and we'll take it from there!  I'm also putting the call out - if you'd be interested in just sewing costumes, as a business, please contact me.   I will compile a list of names and publish them in the newsletter as another resource for anyone needing a costume!

And finally, something for the genteel spirit in all of us!  On Sunday, 22 Jul 07, the Shelburne Historical Society will host its annual garden party in partnership with the Black Loyalist Heritage Society.  This year's event will be to mark the 224th anniversary of the Loyalist landing in Shelburne and Birchtown.  It will take place from 2-4 pm in the garden of the Ross-Thomson House at 9 Charlotte Lane and admission will be $5.  And although many guests traditionally attend the garden party in 18th century dress, costumes from subsequent centuries will also be welcome.  The afternoon will feature musical entertainment as well as a historical re-enactment by members of the Black Loyalist Heritage Society.  It will be a delightful way to spend a summer afternoon and celebrate Shelburne's history, so don't forget to jot it down on your calendar!

Edition 2007-29
Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2007 17:10:18 -

Good afternoon, sort of .  But have no fear - it's supposed to clear up for tomorrow, plus I've got all kinds of stuff to keep your mind off this weather!

First and foremost, Chair Al Delaney would like to send a big thank you to everyone who showed up for the Loyalist photo shoot on Thursday afternoon at the end of the Tall Ships Festival.  What a crowd!  We had an excellent turn-out by members of the Society, the Black Loyalist Heritage Society, local re-enactment regiments, dedicated LL08 supporters (like Pat Dewar!) and a substantial audience!  Thank you all for being there - it was absolutely awesome to see so many people in costume and period dress staged as if they were coming ashore 224 years ago, with the Tall Ships in the background.  We even had a team of oxen! Chair Al took many great pictures - hopefully, one or two will make it on the cover of tourism and community publications next year!

Jeff Strang of Ideal Discount informs me that he has received his first order of 100 - 3' x 5' Loyalist flags and 75 flagpoles.  The flags are only $12.99 each, or you can buy a flag and a flagpole with attachment for only $19.99.  At that price, every building in Shelburne County should be decked out in Loyalist colours for 2008, right?

Hi folks!  The newsletter tonight is all about putting the call out for volunteers.  In one case, it's super short and sweet.  In the other, it involves a certain commitment.  Please read on!

First, the short and sweet.  As you all know, the Shelburne County Exhibition is coming up and that will mark the end of the rocking dory raffle when the winner is drawn by Curtis Mahaney at the Ex.  I would dearly love to give one last push on the raffle tickets (we need all the money we can get!!) and was wondering if anyone out there would like to help.  I'm looking for volunteers to sell raffle tickets (and LL08 t-shirts) for only two hours at a time:
Wednesday 8 Aug, 5-7 pm and 7-9 pm
Thursday 9 Aug, 5-7 pm and 7-9 pm
Friday 10 Aug, 5-7 pm
Curtis has very kindly offered to sell tickets from 7-9 pm on Friday.  =
The draw, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, has been moved to Friday at 9 pm.  As the builder of the dory, we want Curtis to draw the winning ticket, but unfortunately, he and his fiddlin' partner Evelyn will be playing in Mill Village on Saturday night.  So, ooops, quick change of plans!

The second call for volunteers qualifies as a definite commitment.  I've been approached by Diane Saulnier, the Immigration Navigator at SWSDA in Yarmouth.  She spearheaded the first annual, and very successful, multicultural food tasting at Seafest on 20 Jul (you may have sampled some of the goodies!).  One of her pet projects is to promote a multicultural food tasting fair in each of Queens, Shelburne and Digby counties next year.  Quelle chance!  It just so happens that we've got big plans for Shelburne County in 2008, and a multicultural food fair would make a wonderful addition to the schedule.  One caveat, however - we have to do it ourselves.  Diane will provide advice, guidance and participate up to a point, but unfortunately, she does not have the personnel resources to take the fairs on the road.  And that's where volunteers and the commitment kick in.  I would definitely be available to HELP organize it, but would not take the lead.  Yes, I have lots of energy, but I'm also not getting any younger ...  So, if the idea of organizing and participating in a multicultural food fair intrigues you, then please contact me.  If I get no response or takers, then there will be no food fair.  Food for thought ...

COMING UP THIS WEEK:
Nothing!  Thank goodness ...

Edition 2007-31
Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2007 21:59:02

Good evening, everyone!

We start off tonight with a tale.  A tale about a group of brave men, a tale of toil and dedication, a tale of sweat and brawn, a tale about the Loyalist cause.  The brave men were a crew of seven who, on Monday 30 Jul, possibly one of the hottest and muggiest days of the summer, either volunteered or were drafted to unload the lumber to build the first longboat for the 2008 celebrations.  The toil and dedication involved a job that would supposedly take about 15 minutes and turned out to take over an hour.  The sweat and brawn involved picking up, stacking and re-stacking oak, pine and spruce planks, some of them up to 26 feet long!  Just the 7" x 4" piece of oak that will be used for the keel of the boat measured 18 feet and required all seven of them to move it!  But undaunted, they persevered, uncomplaining, unflinching in their determination, until the job was done and done right.  Really big thank yous go to:

Graham & John Huskilson    - for letting us use their facilities to temporarily store the lumber
Stanley Scott & trusty companion Molly, the log-rolling pooch (and the gang from Scott's Mill)    - for finding, milling and delivering the perfect planks
The brave crew, in no particular order    - Paul Dewar, Paul Delaney, Michael Campbell, Milford Buchanan, Patrick Lewis, Chair Al       and Treasurer Jim.
The moral of this tale?  If Chair Al calls you up on the hottest and muggiest day and tells you he needs you for a little job that'll only take 15 minutes ... RUN!
Thank you, all of you - we really appreciate the help and support!

Next, Jeff Strang informs me that he has finally received the new Shelburne postcards.  I got a sneak peek and they're beautiful!  Jeff has a wholesale price list for the postcards and various other things, including the Loyalist flags.  So, if you're interested in buying to sell, pls contact Jeff at idealdisc@aliantzinc.ca.

Another thank you goes out to all the volunteers who stepped forward following my call for help last week.  Within 24 hours, I had all the shifts to sell raffle tickets at the Ex filled!  Incredible - you folks made my week!

And while on the subject of the Shelburne Ex, the LL08 Society will have a float at the parade on Tue 7 Jul and we're looking for people to sit on the float or walk beside it, preferably in 18th century costume.  If you're interested in joining the float but don't have a costume, contact me - I'll see what I can rustle up.  The parade starts at 6:30 on Minto Street, but we need to be in place no later than 6 pm for the float judging.  See you there!

Also, heads up!  The next regular meeting of the LL08 Society will be held on Tue 14 Aug at 1 pm, in the Town Council Chambers.  The meeting is open to everyone!

COMING UP THIS WEEK:
The Shelburne County Archives & Genealogical Society will be hosting a Smith Family Tea & Photo Display on Thur 9 Aug, 2-4 pm on the second floor of the Town Office, 168 Water Street.  For more info, please contact 875-4299.

Edition 2007-32
Date: Sun, 12 Aug 2007 21:42:42 -0300

Good evening!  Sorry to be so late - hard to get motivated to sit at the computer in this kind of weather ...!

Top of the list tonight -
The LL08 Society is very pleased to announce that Mr. Edgar Crouse of Liverpool is the lucky winner of the rocking dory raffle!  When contacted on Saturday, Mr. Crouse seemed very pleased with his new prize - it will be delivered to him sometime this week.  We did promise delivery to the winner - thank goodness it's Liverpool and not California

On behalf of the Loyalist Landing 2008 Society, I would like to thank everyone who supported our rocking dory raffle - Curtis Mahaney who built and donated the rocking dory, all of you who generously bought tickets, the many great volunteers who sold tickets (including the Lions Club!), and the many organizations and partners that allowed us to sell tickets at their events.  Thanks to you, we raised over $1,300 to finance events next year - it's a big help!  The draw was held this past Friday night at the Shelburne County Exhibition and we were honoured to have Curtis there to draw the winning ticket!

And some more financial good news!  As a result of an initiative by Mr. Lewis Perry, who heads the Halifax-Dartmouth Branch of the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada (UELAC for short), we received word yesterday that the Association has very kindly given us a grant of $450 to apply towards the cost of the longboats!   Isn't that great?  And the timing couldn't be better - the funds will be earmarked for the hardware, glues and lots of stainless steel screws that will be needed.  Anything left over will be put against the cost of the oars that are being constructed by Fancy's Oars & Paddles, a small business near Mahone Bay that has provided oars for boats along the South Shore and beyond for many years.  So a big thank you to Mr. Perry and the UELAC - we really appreciate your support!

One last thing - it was fantastic to see everyone along the Exhibition parade route last Tuesday night!  Great turn-out, lots of waves, smiles and greetings - we had a ball!

COMING UP THIS WEEK -
1)  Some R&R at the beach!!!
2)  Don't forget that the Barrington Exhibition starts next weekend!

PLEASE NOTE - The LL08 Society meeting scheduled for Tue 14 Aug has been cancelled due to summer.

Edition 2007-33
Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2007 17:27:44

Good afternoon!  It's nice to see the sunshine after the monsoons . but although the calendar may say summer, my goose bumps clearly say fall!

Received word this week from the LL08 Society's Re-enactment Committee that planning for the Grand Re-enactment Weekend, 17-20 Jul 08, is progressing well.  The line-up for the weekend features cannon firings, formations, drills, skirmishes, a boat burning and parades (not the float kind, but the marching kind).   Of course, the focal point of the weekend will no doubt be the grand re-enactment of an 18th century military landing.  This event will take place on the waterfront and will involve the LL08 Society's longboats, various other period vessels being rowed ashore by re-enactors, and a Nova Scotia celebrity.  Another highlight will be a parade to the cenotaph in a salute to all who have served and are serving.  The sights, the sounds, the fanfare and the colour - it's going to be quite the show!

There will also be two historic events taking place as part of the Grand Re-enactment Weekend:  the introduction of the "Shelburne Fyfe", which is being created specifically for Shelburne and the 225th anniversary celebrations by Shelburne fife makers, Yola and Forbes Christie; and the provincial Town Criers Competition, which, in 2008, will be celebrating its 25th anniversary.  A little history and trivia for your next cocktail party - the very first Nova Scotia Town Criers Competition was held in Shelburne in 1983 as part of the bicentennial festivities.  And 25 years later, they're back once again to celebrate with us!

And just when you think you might get bored, the weekend's schedule will also include a Baroque Concert at the Osprey Arts Centre, the annual garden party with a pageant of authentic 18th century dress (courtesy of the re-enactors), an exhibit by Shelburne County hookers and quilters, and the annual Coastal Oldies Antique Car Show!  Think that's enough?

Surprisingly though, the Grand Re-enactment Weekend won't start on Thursday, 17 Jul 08.  Nope - it kicks off on Saturday, 25 Aug 07.  That's when the LL08 Society's Re-enactment Committee will lead a work party to re-seed the now vacant site of the old Shelburne Regional High School on King Street.  This is where the re-enactors will set up their encampment during the Grand Re-enactment Weekend and one of the prerequisites is grass underfoot.  The work party will be a day-long event, expected to run from 7 am to 7 pm (although you don't necessarily have to be there all that time .), and it's a BYOE (bring your own equipment)!  Jim Spencer will be providing the grass seed mix and the expertise; however, volunteers will be required to provide the manpower.  This project is one of the significant costs of the Grand Re-enactment Weekend, coming in at a ballpark figure of $22,000 if we were to get it done professionally!  But with a little help from many hands, we hope to get it done for the cost of the seed mix only - $2,000!  We could also use some equipment - lawn rakes, grass rakes, wheelbarrows, seeders and even a small tractor.  So if you're interested in doing your bit for 2008 - and getting some fresh air and exercise at the same time - just show up at the site at 7 am on the 25th.  Bring your own lunch and water!  If it rains, the work party will take place the next day, on Sunday 26 Aug.  See you there!

Good afternoon!

Further to last week's call out for recruits for a work party to re-seed the site of the old SRHS, it seems we got quite a turn-out.  I couldn't make it (personal commitments), but I've heard reports that the place was just a beehive of activity!   On behalf of the Loyalist Landing 2008 Society, I'd like to thank everyone who came out to help the Re-enactment Committee.  Your continued support and enthusiasm for the 2008 celebrations are wonderful!  Now keep your fingers crossed that the grass seed will take and the field will be B.A.R.-ready for 2008 - I'll keep you updated on the greening process!

And just when you thought it was safe to go back to your lawn chair, I'm putting the call out for another work party, this time for the longboats.  On Wed, 29 Aug, we're hoping to pull together enough manpower (and womanpower!!) to clean out a section of the old Mill Building, located behind the Muir-Cox Shipyard on the waterfront.  This is where the lumber for the longboats will be planed and cut, in preparation for building the longboats, which will actually be done in the Muir-Cox Shipyard over the fall and winter.  However, the area to be used has become a bit of a storage shed for unused, forgotten or derelict items over the last few years and requires some clearing out before the tools and the lumber can be brought in.  If you've been by the building in the last few days, you may have noticed two large dumpsters located beside it - the plan will be to clean out the space around the planer and band saw and the area we need to get the wood ready.   So, if you're interested and available, we could use the help.  Meet us on Wed, 29 Aug at 9 am at the old Mill Building.   Bottled water will be provided, but bring work gloves and wear work boots or some other good footwear - safety first!   See you Wed!

COMING UP THIS WEEK:

The LL08 Society's Retail Sales & Promotion Committee, headed by Doug Langley, will meet on Mon (tomorrow) 27 Aug at 7 pm at the Shelburne Community Centre.  Anyone can attend, especially if you've got some good ideas for retail sales that you'd like to share!

UPCOMING EVENTS FOR YOUR CALENDAR:

- The Shelburne County Archives & Genealogical Society will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on Sat, 15 Sep, 7:30 pm at the Osprey Arts Centre.  Guest speaker Dr. Terrence Punch, who is currently the resident genealogist for CBC Maritime Noon, will give a presentation on Loyalist Period Nova Scotia Research 1775-1800.  There will be displays and refreshments.  Tickets are $7 for GenCentre members, $10 for non-members and are available at The Whirligig or at the door.

- The Shelburne Harbour Whirligig & Weathervane Festival will be held on the Shelburne waterfront on Sat & Sun, 22 & 23 Sep.  The weekend's activities will also feature a whirligig workshop on Sat 22 Sep.  For more info, contact John Brown at 875-3205 or check out www.WhirligigFestival.com.

Good morning!

Although it's been a very busy week in 2008 behind-the-scenes stuff, there's really nothing much to report on.  The lumber for the longboats was recently moved from its temporary storage area to a permanent location, handy and ready for the construction crew.  We've been fine-tuning events, adding some new ones, shifting others around, working on fundraising and retail sales - trust me, we haven't been bored!

Further to my call-out last week for a volunteer work party to clean up the Cox Mill Building, I'd like to thank a whole bunch of dedicated people who showed up to help - Pat & Paul Dewar, Robert Enslow, Pat Delaney, Bill Cox, Trevor Marriott, Michael DesChamps, Doug Langley, Chair Al and Treasurer Jim.  It was messy, dirty work, but we got most of it done!  We filled two dumpsters and a dump truck, and there's still a bit more to go - but we've made a sizeable dent.  So thank you all for coming out to help - once again, your continued support means so much to us!

Heads up!  The next regular meeting of the LL08 Society will be held on Mon, 10 Sep at 7:00 pm, somewhere in Shelburne (location TBD).  Look for the agenda later this week.  Everyone is welcome to attend!

Also please note - there may or may not be an LL08 newsletter next week.  Treasurer Jim and I are in the process of setting up house in Shelburne, and by next weekend, the computer may or may not be on the move ...

Good afternoon!  As Sherlock Holmes would say, "There's something afoot, Watson"!  There is indeed - please read on as this item concerns everyone in the Shelburne County community!

If you've read the minutes of the LL08 Society meeting held on 10 Sep, you're aware that we've entered into yet another venture with partner Transcontinental Media.  Bless their hearts, they have very kindly agreed to assemble and publish an 18-month 2008/09 agenda book, not unlike the one that was created for Lockeport's centennial.  The book will contain historical notes, Loyalist stories and pictures about Shelburne County.  It will also list all events that will be held in the County and beyond throughout 2008 as part of and during our year-long celebrations, as well as events into 2009.  What's really wonderful about this venture is that there will be no cost to the Society whatsoever.  Transcontinental will solicit the ads for the agenda book; they will assemble the pictures, text and date entries, and publish the whole thing.  The agenda book will then be ours to sell as a 2008 fundraiser, with the Society keeping all proceeds to help finance 2008 events - wow!!  Isn't that incredible?  The aim is to have the agenda book out by the end of Nov 07, so that everyone can buy one or many (hint, hint) for Christmas gifts for family and friends from here and from away.  They will sell for $10 each, a very affordable gift that will also be a beautiful keepsake of our 225th anniversary celebrations. =20

This undertaking is going to be a real community project!

- First off, a huge thank you to Fred Fiander, Shelley Collings and Joe MacDonald (yeah, the one in Shelburne .) from Transcontinental Media for agreeing to take on this project.  Shelley, the Sales Manager for Fundy Division, will be coordinating all the stuff we send her to put in the agenda book.  Joe, who is in charge of sales right here at The Coast Guard, will be responsible for lining up all the advertisements that will appear in the agenda book.  So, heads up to all the Shelburne County (and beyond) businesses - when Joe comes knocking, we hope that you'll be able to participate.  Don't forget - all the money we raise from this agenda book will be used strictly to finance 2008 events; events that will draw in people, people who will use your businesses and =
services.  The bigger the success of the book, the bigger the success of 2008!  And the book will provide great exposure for your business!

- Chair Al Delaney will be donating all the photos that will appear in the agenda book, so not only will he be dipping into his existing collection, but you may also see him flying (literally .) around the area, taking more pictures.  So, if you see Al and his camera, smile!

- I, with help from my significant other and hopefully all of you, will be providing the graphics and all written text that will appear in the agenda book.

- And this is where you come in!  I need every business, organization, service club, church group, historical association, etc. to send me input for the agenda book, as follows:

1)  Any event that will be held from 1 Jan 08 to 31 Jul 09, be it a bingo, an auction, a church supper, a concert, a dance, a walk, a fundraiser, whatever.  If it's an event that will be open to the community and be held in Shelburne County during that time, I want to hear about it.

2)  I will need the details of the event - ie, name/title of the event, date(s), time and location.

3)  If you're in doubt as to whether or not your event qualifies, send it to me anyway!  If it doesn't fit in, I simply won't use it.  Too easy!

4)  Now for the clincher - if we're going to get this agenda book out in time, I need all this input as soon as possible, and certainly no later than Saturday, 13 Oct 07.

Well, there you have it.  Looks like we've all got our work cut out for us, so let's get to it!

Good evening!
1. The LL08 Society is getting a new face - well, actually, we've got two new faces, but those two new faces are giving us a new face. Still with me? I'd like to introduce Susan & John Oswell, fairly new residents of Sandy Point and members of the LL08 Society. Susan & John own and run Winntec Ventures - Internet Marketing & eCommerce. They've been getting the newsletters for a while and have been following the progress of 2008, but a couple of weeks ago, they decided it was time to get involved. Although they were aware that we already had a website through Transcontinental Media, they still approached the Society and offered to take over the website and run it locally, from Shelburne, free of charge, as their contribution to the 2008 effort. After talking it over with the folks at Transcontinental Media, we all agreed that it would likely be in everyone's best interest if we had a more hands-on, locally-run website. Et voilą! Faster than a speeding bullet, John had already acquired a new domain, had copied the website, and was already in the process of re-organizing it! I'm exhausted just thinking about it ...
So, all this to say, we now have a brand new website. The name is pretty much the same, but with a ".com". -
www.LoyalistsatShelburne.com. It's up and running, so check it out. And although John's already added lots of new bells and whistles, he tells me there's still more to come! Well done, Susan & John!
A couple of notes regarding Loyalist costumes:
- If you're interested in making your own Loyalist outfit, Marion Flemming, Lupins Sewing Corner, will be holding sewing classes starting 22 Oct. You'll have the option of hand-sewing or machine-sewing your costume, and the classes will run until 26 Nov, at which time you should be ready to model your new outfit! Classes will be held on Monday evenings 6:45 - 8:45 pm at the Shelburne Regional High School. The sewing class will cost $30 and you have to provide your own fabric. You must pre-register for the class by 15 Oct through the high school's community use program at 875-2831.
- One thing I did forget to mention in the costume resource list - if you're looking for those white socks for a man's costume, they are available at Gosbee's Sporting Goods on Water Street, Shelburne. The socks are very white as they're supposed to be, but if you'd like your socks not quite so white ... soak them in cold tea for a while, to give them a more weathered look!

Good evening! Just a quick one tonight!
1. Have you had a look at our new website -
www.LoyalistsatShelburne.com ? There's no stopping John, our Website Coordinator - every time I click in, there's a new feature! The website now includes the LL08 newsletters, minutes of meetings, a photo gallery, even a sign-up sheet! So pay us a visit and enjoy the show!
2. If you think you might like to help out in next year's provincial Town Crier Competition that will be held in Shelburne as part of the Grand Re-enactment Weekend 17-20 Jul, then you might want to attend this meeting. The President of the Nova Scotia Guild of Town Criers will be coming to Shelburne to discuss details of the event as part of the 2008 celebrations and you're invited to join us to find out what it's all about. The meeting will be held on Monday, 15 Oct, 4 pm in the Town Council Chambers.
3. Quite a few organizations and individuals have sent me the dates of their events for the 2008/09 agenda book - thank you! Keep them coming!
