Good morning! Lots to share this morning, so let’s get started!
First, I regret to announce that the LL08 Society has cancelled the 2008/09 agenda book fundraising project. As you’ll recall in last week’s newsletter, I reported that ad sales had been sluggish, and although my appeal did generate some response, it still wasn’t enough. We had barely reached the half-way point for the required funds to cover the publishing costs and extending the deadline wouldn’t help - not in time, anyway. The reality is that there is only so much money out there and we appreciate that local businesses have only so much money for advertising. After discussing the situation with Transcontinental Media and weighing our options, we decided the wisest course of action was to simply cancel the whole venture. In hindsight, the book seemed like a good idea, but ultimately the timing was perhaps not the best. Regardless of the outcome, a fair amount of work went into the effort and, on behalf of the LL08 Society, I would like to thank all the businesses, organizations and service clubs that supported the fundraiser by submitting events and committing to an ad. This project can perhaps be resurrected sometime in the future as a fundraiser for a local organization - an agenda book for Shelburne County is still a great idea…….
But wait! All is not lost!! There’s no way we’re going to let all those events go to waste! And so, I am pleased to announce that John, our ever trusty, can-do and wise web guru, will be adding a community calendar to the LL08 website that will hold all 2008 Shelburne County community events, including the LL08 events! Over the next week, we’ll input every community event we have onto the website calendar. And bonus - keep those events coming and we’ll just keep adding them throughout 2008. So, reminder to all Shelburne County organizations, clubs, churches, etc. - as new events come up in 2008, call or e-mail me and I’ll add them to the community calendar. Shelburne County will literally be at our fingertips!
According to the counter on the website, there are only 31 days left until 1 Jan 08 and the Loyalist Levee! This, the first event of our year-long celebration, is one you will not want to miss - it will feature 18th century re-enactors, dancing, a reading, period music and song. It will be an afternoon filled with a little fun, a little history, a little entertainment, a little pomp and ceremony and lots of celebrating together as a community. An invitation to the Levee is attached. Bring your family and your friends!
COMING UP THIS WEEK - LOTS!
From 1-7 pm today, 1 Dec and 1-6 pm tomorrow, 2 Dec, there is the Wayne & Lynne Perry Scholarship Fund Christmas Open House at 60 Kenney Road, Stoney Island, CSI. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Barrington kicks off the Christmas season tonight at 7 pm with their annual Festival of Lights Christmas Parade. The parade will wind its way from BMHS to Causeway Interiors.
Don’t forget the Sanctuary Trio at Trinity United Church in Shelburne tonight. The performance starts at 8 pm, tickets are $20 at the door.
And a correction to last week’s newsletter! The Trinity United Church carol singing and Christmas music on Sun, 2 Dec will be held at the Osprey Arts Centre, NOT the church. It begins at 3 pm and admission is free, but donations to the Shelburne Loyalist Food Bank will be welcome.
Also on Sun 2 Dec, 7 pm, the 2nd Annual Family Christmas Coffee House will be held at the Lower Ohio Hall. The event will be hosted by the Lower Ohio Recreation Association and will feature local entertainment, yummy desserts, a variety of fancy coffees and a chance to catch up with neighbours, friends and family. Admission is a donation at the door.
Heads up! The next regular meeting of the LL08 Society will be held on Tue, 4 Dec, 8 pm, in the Town Council Chambers. Agenda’s already out.
Next Sat 8 Dec, ERMES in Shag Harbour will be holding its 15th Annual Christmas Craft Market. It runs from 10 am - 3 pm and admission is $2 at the door.
Also next Sat 8 Dec, 8 pm, Shelburne’s famous Basement Theatre will present “Snowbirds”, a new Christmas play by local author Darcy Rhyno, at the Osprey Arts Centre. Tickets are $12 and available at The Whirligig.
And finally, on Sat 8 Dec and again on Fri 14 Dec, the Shag Harbour Incident Society will be hosting a Christmas Open House at the home of Merna Rennehan on Bear Point. The house has an interesting history - it was originally the home of Loyalists John and Nancy Stoddart, and a number of years back, it was floated to its current location from Stoddart’s Island. The event will run from 6-9 pm both nights and a suggested admission of $5 will be payable at the door.
And now, back again this year by popular demand (humour me!), it’s time for this week’s Christmas trivia! I’ll get you warmed up with an easy one …
Which of these birds is not mentioned in “The Twelve Days of Christmas”?
a. turtledove b. partridge
c. swan d. ostrich
Tune in next week for the correct answer!

Edition 2007-48
Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2007

Good afternoon - barely!

Countdown - only 24 days till the Loyalist Levee and the start of a busy, exciting year!  The details for the Levee have been finalized thanks to the great teamwork of Mary Lee Gonzaga, Penny Smith and myself, and the invitations are out!   The afternoon will be full of activities - an official cake cutting, period dancing by the Prince of Wales Dancers, 18th century drills by Shelburne's own New Jersey Volunteers, music and song by a whole line-up of local talent - the Melanson Trio, Pat DeMolitor and the Smith Family - and, of course, lots of food!  It's an event not to be missed and one that's sure to instill some Loyalist spirit in you.  Make a point to be there, and bring your family and friends!

John, our ever diligent, perfectionist, burning-the-midnight-oil web guru is doing some tweaking on the website.  He's in the process of amalgamating some of the sections, revamping others and generally just makin' it perty!  He's asked me to pass along the following information to any business or organization that may want to link with the LL08 Society website:

Trade Links with LoyalistsAtShelburne.com
For all of you who have business websites, we've now added a Link Exchange or Link Trading capability to the LL08 site.  If you have a website, then you know that trading links with other compatible, respected, quality sites on the 'net helps your rankings in the search engines, so people will find you more easily.  The whole LL08 site is fully indexed in Google, Yahoo and MSN and we currently have over 20 ranked pages with ratings between PR2 and 3. This is just a start and we aim to do much better!

If you operate a business in our local area (Digby, Yarmouth, Shelburne, Queens or Lunenburg counties) or even anywhere in Nova Scotia, or are associated with Loyalist interests, American Revolution or other reenactment groups or historical societies and you have a website, then you may be interested in becoming a linking partner with the LL08

If you are we'd like to hear from you, just
Click Here, fill in the form and send us your information. Once approved we'll add you to our Link Partners.  If you're not sure what link pages look like then click here to see an example."  Thank you, John!

John has also installed a new Shelburne Events calendar on the website - this is where we'll post all the community events you've sent me that will take place in Shelburne County in 2008.  It's a Google calendar and has lots of nifty features, so not only do you see the event on the calendar, but you can also click to get the full details on the event.  Gotta love technology!  I'm about half-way through the year, so bear with me as I chug along to finish inputting the remainder of the year.  I do invite you to check out what's there, and to keep in mind that as new events come up, send them to me so I can put them in too!

As reported in the minutes of the LL08 Society meeting held this past Tuesday, we have some lapel pins for sale as another LL08 fundraiser.  The pins are round, with the LL08 logo, are very good quality, and are sturdy with a pewter-like finish on the back, making them quite 18th century appropriate.  And they have the most interesting feature - when you purchase one, you'll note that the pin is not located in the centre of the back, but near the top of the back.  Reason?  Lapel pins can be a little irritating because they keep twisting around on your lapel, and eventually the logo or picture is upside down.  Not on these babies!  Positioning the pin near the top of the back prevents that from happening - simple, yet so ingenious!  Anyway, the pins are really lovely and are a great way to show of your Loyalist spirit.  Plus, how many shopping days till Christmas?  They'll also make a great stocking stuffer, and at only $5 each, they're very affordable.  If you're interested in buying a pin, contact Doug Langley at 875-1258 or you can spot him walking around town.  He's the cheerful fella carrying the little red & blue lunch box!

COMING UP THIS WEEK:
1.  If you get the urge to go for a drive tonight, head out to Bear Point in Shag Harbour.  The Shag Harbour Incident Society is hosting a Christmas Open House at the home of Merna Rennehan from 6-9 pm tonight and again next Fri, 14 Dec.  A suggested admission is $5 at the door.  You'll not only get to tour a beautiful home that dates back to the Loyalists (including a special British room!), but you'll also get to hitch a ride with Santa as he ferries you from the church parking lot to the house!
2.  Don't forget that the Basement Theatre group is putting on the new Darcy Rhyno play "Snowbirds" at the Osprey tonight.  The show starts at 8 pm and tickets were available at The Whirligig for $12.  As of yesterday, there were very few tickets left, but you might still try your luck at the door.
3.  From 2-4 pm tomorrow, Sun 9 Dec, the Shelburne Historical Society will be holding its Christmas party, complete with refreshments, storytelling, caroling and a visit from busy Santa.  At the museum complex.
4.  And also tomorrow afternoon, Sun 9 Dec, Trinity United Church will be hosting the 25th Annual Christmas Concert featuring the Shelburne County Festival Choir and the Trinity United Church Hand Bell Choir.  Guaranteed to get you into the Christmas mood!  The concert starts at 3 pm and admission is payble at the door - $10 for adults, $8 for seniors/students.
5.  Finally, the most important event of the year!!  Santa arrives in Shelburne this Wed, 12 Dec, 6:30 at the Town Park at the corner of King and Water Streets.  Get your list ready.  Ho, ho, ho!

And now it's time for .... Christmas Trivia!
Last week's question:
Which of these birds is not mentioned in "The Twelve Days of Christmas"?
a.  turtledove        b.  partridge        c.  swan        d.  ostrich
Ostrich is the correct answer, and as many of you pointed out, this one was way too easy!  Hey, I was trying to break you in gently ...

This week's question:
Who popularized the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"?
a.  Bing Crosby         b.  Hoagy Carmichael (who?)        c.  Gene Autry             d.  Nat King Cole

Look for the answer in next week's newsletter.  Have a great week!

Edition 2007-49
Date: Sun, 16 Dec, 2007
Oh, the weather outside may be frightful on this Sunday evening ... but we've got visions of Christmas and the Loyalist Levée dancing in our heads!
Only 16 more sleeps till the Levée! I've been conducting my own non-scientific poll - basically consisting of "hey, you're coming to the Levée, aren't you?" - to see how many of you are planning to attend. And I'm very heartened to hear that, although many of you have never attended the Town or Municipal Levées, or any other Levée for that matter, you're planning to attend this special one! That's the Loyalist spirit! Plus there’s an old superstition that the first of the year sets the tone for the rest of the year, so let's have a great party on the first, and show 2008 that we plan to have a great year!
Yesterday, while the rest of us were cozy by the fire and gearing up for today's storm, a few hardy souls were braving the winter winds up in the wilds of Gunning Cove cutting and hauling firewood that will be used by the re-enactors at the encampment during the Grand Re-enactment Weekend in July 2008. The wood, very generously donated by Lt-Col John Aylward who is a member of the Massachusetts National Guard and a summer resident of Gunning Cove, is now corded and drying nicely in Shelburne in anticipation of next July's festivities. A very big thank you to Col John for his contribution to the 2008 celebrations and a big pat on the back to the woodsmen and one woodswoman for a job well done!
Also in preparation for next year, a small but dedicated crew of LL08 volunteers recently spent a morning at the Old Mill Building cleaning up the loft and organizing the woodworking equipment that will be used to build the two wooden longboats. The space was also wired to code and appropriate amperage by local electrician Dave Williams, who very kindly donated his services to the 2008 cause. Another big thank you to the work crew and Dave!
Finn Bower at the Shelburne County Museum informs me that they have begun developing next year's Loyalist displays. After some quick research on the internet, we did establish that a 225th anniversary is also known as a quasquibicentennial, which means a quarter more than 200 years. Throw that mouthful around a couple of times at your next cocktail party and you're sure to make an impression ...
And we're not the only ones celebrating a quasquibicentennial next year! The Town of Wallace, NS - originally named Remsheg - will be commemorating the 225th anniversary of the arrival of the "Remsheg Loyalists". The event will be held on 28, 29 and 30 Jun 08 in Wallace. You can check out their website at
http://remsheg225.wetpaint.com/ or contact Ellen Muise, one of the organizers, at remsheg225@yahoo.ca.
Now, once again, it’s time for … Christmas Trivia!
Last week’s question:
Who popularized the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”?
a. Bing Crosby b. Hoagy Carmichael
c. Gene Autry d. Nat King Cole
The big sugarplum goes to Donna Van Buskirk (aka DeeVanBee) of London, ON who was the first one to send me the correct answer - Gene Autry. In her e-mail, Donna also reminisced about Roy Rogers, the other singing cowboy. She said the song brought back many fond childhood memories …
This week’s question is for our local law enforcement officers:
Although he’s never been charged, Santa Claus is technically guilty of co
mmitting which crime every Christmas Eve?
a. jaywalking   b. trespassing   c. theft   d. obstruction of justice
Tune in next week for the answer. Have a great week!

Edition: 2007-50
Date: Sun, 23 Dec, 2007

Not much to report this week as we're all taking a little breather before 2008 and concentrating on Christmas!  Only two more sleeps before Christmas - hope you've got all your shopping done!  And only nine more sleeps before the Loyalist Levée and the start of a fantastic year!

Last week's Christmas Trivia question generated lots of e-mails and quite a few chuckles:
Although he’s never been charged, Santa Claus is technically guilty of committing which crime every Christmas Eve?
a.  jaywalkingb.  trespassing
c.  theftd.  obstruction of justice

Marion Flemming of Lupins Sewing Corner wins the big sugarplum this week - she was the first one to answer "b.  trespassing".

But when you think about it, poor old Santa actually leaves himself wide open to a whole slew of charges ...
- break & enter:  in addition to the original trespassing charge ...
- littering:  does he scoop the reindeer poop?
- illegal parking:  parking on the roof of a house must be illegal somewhere ...
- disturbing the peace:  all that ho, ho, ho-ing and dancing on the rooftop at all hours of the night, not to mention the ruckus from all those reindeer hooves ...
- burglary:  I know the milk and cookies are left for him, but I'll bet some hot shot lawyer could probably make that charge stick!

On behalf of the Loyalist Landing 2008 Society, I would like to wish you all a very, merry Christmas!  And stay safe - I'm expecting you at the Levée!

Ho!  Ho!  Ho!
